In this classic tale of illusion and truth, an independent-minded Beauty discovers the power of love and the courage to change as she confronts a sensitive Beast. The story begins as a wealthy merchant is returning home to tell his children his entire fortune was lost when his ships were destroyed at sea. The play is based on the fairy tale version of the story by Madame de Beaumont from 1756. The mysterious castle, the jealous sisters, the enchanting rose arbor, and the magical gloves – all are woven together in a magical adaptation. Birmingham Children’s Theatre was founded in 1947 by Dorothy Schwartz of the Junior League in Birmingham, Alabama. Now in its 59th season, BCT is one of America’s largest theatres for children, bringing classic literature to life for nearly 400,000 children per season.
